I watched a famous talk show with a former out of control high schooler who had graduated and procured a full time factory job. The show’s star gave her a hard time and indicated she should utilize her college trust fund instead of working at the factory. I only saw clips, but it seemed she barely graduated. She once got great grades and was a standout basketball player, but later had drug issues, took advantage of her parents’ money, obsessed over a guy and behaved atrociously. She was taking better steps but still issues to resolve. The star’s statements about college didn’t sit right with me.
I am impressed with the girl. Entry level jobs aren’t glamorous but give insight to fields of potential interest, realization of strengths and may tide someone over until they are in a place to make smart decisions. The girl had treated teachers poorly, kept bad friends, gave a loser boy money for drugs, snuck in his house and spent hours trying to win his affections. In college she’d still have teachers, could text the boy 100 times a day and skip class. She may gravitate toward the wrong crowd, couldn’t pick out a major with intelligence and may have trouble maturing. At the factory, she had diverse coworkers, a set schedule, rules, succeeded in her job duties, concentrated on something useful each day, didn’t take work stress home and began to make better choices. When she was healthy it seemed she could better pursue the right degree at the right school. Additionally, not every factory coworker had a college trust fund set up. Seeing how hard people work to support their families may give her an appreciation for her gifts. It was a wise decision.
Start to soar from wherever you are. An employee is often exposed to many positions and could study them. S/he may like or be curious about HR, accounting or office operations, packaging and engineering fields, advertising and graphic design and get a feel for product development, buying, management, sales, shipping, and/or technology. Someone may realize they can find ways to increase efficiency, are a natural leader, great with customers and like operations. They could start looking at business plans and get energized by ways to increase company growth. Used correctly, an entry level job can be almost like school. Interests and strengths could lead you to further education or to work hard on the job, garnering promotions and increased responsibilities. Whether you have a GED or PhD you have strengths and matter. If you do your job well and proactively look for ways to increase your company’s productivity and growth, you shine. I am an education advocate, had a blast in college and wouldn’t have traded the adventure for anything. But God’s plan was so far from the course I chose for myself at age 18. My passions and strengths lie in areas I ran from while still in school. Thankfully, I found myself in corporate marketing and was blessed to continue coursework in business communications. Going to grad school at night reiterated what I was learning during the day and that’s when my passion for development, growth, strategic planning, employment and the economy absolutely exploded.With over 900 careers, and new professions continuing to be developed, there is no way to know how many places one could succeed. The sky can be the limit.
